DJ J-ra
Interview by Lady T

Hey....dj.....play that song......
J-ra the reason why hipsters try to be hip. A star of the musical shuffle of funky soul music
with a touch of rebel rock that grabs you and dry humps you to the dance floor. I had the
chance to chat with Mr.dj before one of his many events on the queen west strip.

How long have you been spinning?

I've been spinning for a little over 2 years

You have been know to play everything from Ol' skool to 70's rock.....why?

Well, why not. Theres soo much good music out there that isn't been played. It makes for an interesting set.... Like, I always get the craziest reaction when playing house, then drop Light My Fire by The Doors...people go "What"! i didn't know you could mix that together.

How would you describe your dj following so far?

To be honest. Just a good mix of people, friends and Dj's in and around the parkdale hood. They love to party, they love to drink, they know their music and what get them moving but still want to hear something diifferent.

Do you have a favourite dj in the city, and why?

O my gad, their are so many good DJ's in the City that it would be hard to narrow down to A favorite.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

Well. I'm an actor by day, DJ by night....Of African descent. Nigerian to be exact. Dabbled in Writting and Fashion in school. Fell in love with DJing along the way...Love food. The spicier the better. I wanna see every country on the planet...well...not quite ready for Alaska. Love Sci-fiction and dying to see SPACE.

How do you juggle being a actor, model and dj in the city?

Litterally 1 second @ a time. There's 60 sec in a minute. Theres always time....but it ultimately depends on how bad u want it.

What tracks for you right now are big crowd pleasers!?

Makosa by Manu Di bango. Nights of the Jaguar by Underground Resistance. What a sensation by Ken Lou. Steppin in high Miller shoes by Betty Davies. Enter the dragon theme song by Dennis Coffey. Witch doctor by Armand Van Heldon and I ain't no joke by Rakim.

Where is the CRAZIEST place or function that you have played in?

I played @ a party last summer called THE LOST VEGAS party. It was at the Box Car. Costumed event, the theme...VEGAS. Their was an Acrobatic show. Show girls in feathers and all kinds of tight shiny stuff. Stripper show, stripper poles. Hell, even I had my own stripper doing her thing while I was playing...MM, it was a good day!

Name your top 5 places to eat in the city?

O men, now your really puttin me on the spot...um, Dosa Mahal on Bloor...MM, damn good Samosa's Buoy! Timothy's Tikka house on parliament. Nazareth...Some serious Ethiopian EEats on tha Cheap. Banu Iranian Vodka Bar, Best lamb chops I ever had...and I'm usually not crazy about lamb. O yeah, cant forget Rancho Relaxo...Bad ass Burrito and ChimiCHanga,s...hmm, think my stomach just started growling. Damn!

Name your top 5 bar/lounges in the city?

Lot 16, Gladstone Hotel, Toi bar, Foundation room. The drake.

Whats next for j-ra????

More of the same things that I'm already doing....Just Better and bigger.

How did you get into Acting?

How did i get into acting?...Hmm. when I was working the restaurant circuit a few years back. Ran into an old friend who introduced me to EXTRA work on movie set for extra cash. "BACKGROUND work" for those who dont know. Caught the Acting Bug and I havent been able to stop the itch ever since.

Have you met any cool stars??? and are there any assh*l*s you would like 2 mention??

I've meet some cool Actors, "stars" in the past. Jude Law, Jessica Alba, Mike myers. Louis Gosset Jr. But it all depends on when you meet them. If they're having a long day shooting One scene....um yeah. watch out! Otherwise it's all butter.

Where can people pick up your mix cd in town?

Pretty much at places that I play right now. I'm at the drake, every third wednesday of the month on the main floor. And I'm also on rotation for the saturday nights at Lot 16. But, I will have a Mix set on facebook by the end of this week, so come check it out. The name is Abdul Adamson.
