Interview with House music label's main Man Andy Roberts of Mixed Signals Music
Interview by Foxxy

The future of True Soulful House Music in Toronto and then "he will take on the world is in the hands of One Grand label that reps TORONTO." I welcome our readers to the conductor of The Toronto underground, MIXED SIGNALS MUSIC and the man that has planted the seed is Mr DJ himself, Andy Roberts. I had the chance to talk with him.

Tell me a bit about Mixed signals music? (you can include if you are the sole proprietor.)

Mixed Signals Music is a Record Label Based in Toronto Canada, specializing in forward thinking deep house.

Why did you decide to start a label?

It was the next logical step in my evolution as an artist and a DJ after producing for other record labels, I wanted to take my craft to the next level by beginning Mixed Signals Music. Toronto and Canada is full of talented musicians, DJs and producers. We wanted to create an outlet for them to gain exposure on a worldwide scale.

Why did you choose Canada?

Our music is distributed all over the world, Toronto just happens to be where I’m from.

How has business been so far?

Other than the all too common bumps in the road, the label is gaining worldwide recognition for its releases. We are feeling the pinch like everyone else in the industry, but the future bodes well for the digital realm.

You recently had a 1 year anniversary jam. Did you accomplish what you wanted so far?

The label has actually been around for over 2 years, plans are in the works for a 2.5 year anniversary party (the 2 year anniversary was postphoned due to reasons beyond our control).

Is the label focused on just house music?

For the time being our focus is house music, our plan is to allow the label to grow in whichever direction the future takes us. Our goal is to not be pigeonholed into one sound, but to also maintain our integrity with respect to where our music has come from.

As you expand on an international level....will you host parties outside Canada?

There are plans to host parties outside of Toronto, possibly across Canada. We do aim to take our brand international with tours and collaborations with like minded companies from across the globe. For the time being we are taking baby steps.

What are the positive sides towards running your own label?

There is nothing like seeing something you had a hand in creating through the final product and onto store shelves around the world.

Are there any "dirty" negative sides with the "biz", cause there always is?

Having to hunt down distributors for money, everybody is hurting these days and the labels are the ones who suffer the most. Especially the independents.

Where do you see mixed signals music in three years?

Our goal is to keep producing quality events and releases, eventually albums and compilations.

So "I hear" that the label is known for a "GREAT" IN THE NITE" parties??? Tell me more.

We have been fortunate to help restart Toronto's house scene by hosting underground events that have been successful and working with many great people in the process. We will continue to do the occasional late night event, but we truly are focusing on bringing this sound back into the club environment by hosting quality events.

Do you plan to have or I mean collaborate in some " IN THE NITE" parties???? (See above).

Also...I heard that the label....plans to buy a loft/warehouse space in the spring? Is that true?

No

Any New Years goals for the label in 2007?

Take our events to the next level with regards, and with our label go digital and continue to release quality music.

Who would you like to work with this year?

Everybody!

I heard that there is a remix that you are working with right now...from a group called...ESKALATION????? Tell me more?

Wow, you really do your research! Actually, we are working with them on a track called “Breakthru” featuring Sacha Williamson on vocals. This track has the potential to be huge and will be our first offering in 2007, potentially due out in March/April.

What would you like the cyber universe to know....that they may not know about your label? You can find out more info about us at www.mixedsignals.ca or www.myspace.com/mixed_signals_music.
