Born
in Brampton, Ontario and of Jamaican heritage and is now living
in the big city of Toronto. Mr. Don Cash is a man on a mission
to find the true connections between people, music and the myth
of life. I had the chance to speak with this man of mysteries
a little while ago...and it went a little something like this....
Tanya: How did your life in music begin?
Don
Cash: I grew up with grown people and I was always surrounded
by music.
Tanya: How
did that effect your taste in the music you do?
Don
Cash: I appreciated artists like Marley and Wings,
because they took some time to own their craft, and that's
what I do.
Tanya: Your
CD "On The Bus",
is your 12th album and the first on your label Stereoeagle. How
did that come together?
Don
Cash: I
had some money saved and my choices were get a new computer
or put out a record. The reason for my label is so I can keep
track of the manufactering and make sure shit is selling.
Tanya: How
about the other CDs will they resurface on the label?
Don
Cash: Yes. I am hoping they will be mastered and pressed
soon.
Tanya: Will
you produce other artists?
Don
Cash: I'm
thinking of it. I'm an artist, I don't produce little
blonde girls for the industry.
Tanya: Interesting,
please explain?
Don
Cash: The industry concentrates on making strippers.
Tanya: Is
there a Canadian artist that you respect?
Don
Cash: I
think Robbie Robertson from the 60's group The Band. He is or
should be a national hero and treasure. I don't think he gets
the respect he deserves cause he's "6 nations."
Tanya: What
do you think of the Toronto music scene?
Don
Cash: It's
nice and bland, take a look around things are not what they seem.
People are not openly lynching here, although there
is a smug attitude and people do not put extra effort into anything
or anyone. Our society is very white and male dominated, Anglo-Saxon
types that have been here for a while.
Tanya: From
your CD, I'm a fan of the tracks Stardust and The Last Punkrock
Star.
Don
Cash: Thanks! I
was going for something and i got it.
Tanya: I
love that your CD crosses many genres that include electro, hip
hop and A TOUCH OF PUNK AND HOUSE.
Don
Cash: I
have a lot of different styles, I'm not a genre musician.
Tanya: Does
the band consist of just you?
Don
Cash: Yes, and ocassionally my friend Alphonso.
Tanya: Where
do you feel the soul of music today is coming from major labels
or indie labels and why?
Don
Cash: Indie
labels are doing what major labels were suppose to do "find
good music and promote it." What is also good is alot of power
has gone to the artist. You don't have to go to New York anymore.
Tanya: What's
your next project?
Don
Cash: It
will not be "On The Bus 2." It will be a double solo
album of country.
